Drone Regulations in Morocco

Moroccan Police

Are you planning to bring your drone to Morocco? Think again! Drones are illegal in Morocco, and it’s best to leave yours at home. If you happen to already have a drone in your suitcase, you must declare it to customs and border patrol at the airport when you arrive. Here's everything you need to know to make the process as smooth as possible.

Declaring Your Drone at the Airport

Declaring your drone at the airport can actually make your entry into Morocco much easier. The process is straightforward:

  1. The police will ask you to fill out a form upon declaration.
  2. Afterward, they will secure your drone until the day you leave the country.
  3. When it’s time to leave, simply present the form you were given to customs and pay a storage fee ranging between $10 and $50 (depending on the duration).
  4. You will then be given back your drone. This process usually takes between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on how busy the airport is.

What Happens if You Don’t Declare Your Drone?

If you are asked by customs about your drone and you fail to declare it, you could face:

  • Additional questioning and delays in entering the country.
  • Confiscation of your drone.

Morocco takes drone regulations very seriously, especially after several incidents where tourists flew drones over sensitive areas like the king’s palace.

Getting a Drone License in Morocco

Obtaining a license to fly your drone in Morocco is possible but challenging, especially for tourists. Here's the process:

  1. You need to have a business in Morocco that justifies your use of a drone, such as working in the tourism industry or being a content creator like a YouTuber.
  2. Once you meet this requirement, you can apply for a permit to carry your drone from the Ministry of Interior. This permit allows you to transport the drone within the country without confiscation.
  3. To fly the drone, you will need another permit from the local government in each city you plan to operate in.

Why the Strict Drone Laws?

Unfortunately, Morocco’s strict drone regulations didn’t come into effect until some individuals abused the system, leading the government to implement clear rules. There have been numerous incidents where drones were flown over sensitive locations, leading to these restrictions.

While Morocco is a country that has so much to offer with its unique culture, it’s best to leave your drone at home to avoid the hassle and complications.

Remember, Morocco is an open country with welcoming people, and there are plenty of other ways to capture its beauty without the need for a drone.
